SOUTH PASADENA, CA (December 11, 2023) – New local business SPLAT Action Art Studio is now open on 1020 Mission Street in South Pasadena. Founded by longtime friends and Pasadena locals Juan Carlos Franco and Michael Chavez, the studio provides artists of any skill level the space, materials and instruction to try action art techniques not available at most public studios, including splatter painting, acrylic pouring, pendulum painting and more.
Such techniques are popular on TikTok and other social media platforms, but are often inaccessible to beginners. “People see these techniques on TikTok and YouTube and it’s so cool, but sometimes they don’t know how to get started or what supplies they need. And obviously they don’t want to have the mess in their house. So we take care of all of that for you,” says Chavez.
Sessions, which are designed for both adults and families, begin with an introduction to the space and the basics of the day’s techniques, followed by an hour of unstructured painting time. Each painter’s station also includes video monitors to provide additional technique instruction and inspiration.
Owners Chavez and Franco dreamed up the idea of SPLAT during the pandemic. As Chavez and Franco’s family formed a “bubble,” the friends realized that their professional priorities had changed, and that they wanted to share their love of creative expression with their community.
The name SPLAT is actually an acronym that reflects this idea: Splatter Painting Learning Art Therapy. “It’s the idea of art as self-care; as a type of therapy. Even if you are just painting your palette, it’s the act of slowing down—noticing the feeling of the brush in the paint or those types of different sensory experiences. As adults we forget to be present, to take the time to just notice how something feels,” says Franco.
SPLAT is available for individual, family or other group sessions now at www.go2splat.com. The studio is open daily from 10 a.m to 6 p.m. Monthly memberships are also available.
